Im Tal der Wilden Endert
Ulmen
Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2019 - 1st place
Embark on the 20 km hike from Ulmen to Cochem, through the valley of the wild Endert.
In the tours category, the Wilde Endert hiking trail was voted Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2019 by the specialist magazine Wandermagazin.
The starting point of the hike is the crusader castle, which towers over the Ulmen maar is enthroned. From here, you hike over the Ulmener Martberg through the forest to the famous St. Anthony's Cross. According to legend, Heinrich von Ulmen deposited a small bag of earth from Christ's grave at the 17th century St. Anthony's Cross.
The trail continues along a section of the "Carolingian Trail" through the forest. An absolute highlight of the route is the waterfall, the Rausch. All you have to do is follow the signs and you are right at the foot of the Rausch. The thundering waterfall plunges 7 m into the valley basin, this natural spectacle is impressive!
A small bridge leads you over the waterfall to the Maria Martental pilgrimage churchwhich belongs to the monastery of the same name just a few meters away. Continuing along the hiking trail, you cross the road and walk past the wall of the Napoleon Bridge on the right, over which the old Koblenz-Trier post road once stretched. A narrow, stony path now leads back to the stream. From here, the path makes its way over bridges, past old mills and steep slopes. There were once 28 mills here. You can imagine how laborious the transportation of flour and grain was at that time. The path gradually widens and you reach the end of the wild Endert valley. Here in Cochem, the small Endertbach stream flows into the Moselle. We recommend taking a walk through the romantic little town of Cochem. Another highlight is a visit to Cochem Castle, which dates back to the first half of the 12th century.
You will find refreshment stops directly along the hiking trail as well as in Ulmen, Martental and in Cochem.
For safety reasons , we ask cyclists not to use the path!
Be careful in wet conditions, there is a risk of slipping on the rocky paths!
Sturdy shoes and rucksack provisions are recommended.
